Mother’s Day was first celebrated in ancient Greece, and was the holiday of Lung, the mother of all gods. With the spread of Christianity they celebrated “Mother’s Day Church”, and over the years the holiday merged with “Mother’s Day”. In 1600 we celebrated “Mothers’ Sunday” in honor of British mothers. On this Sunday the slaves were given a leave of absence to come to their homes to celebrate the festival. During the holiday, a special cake called “Mother Cake” was eaten.

In the United States, the concept of “Mother’s Day” developed in the second half of the 19th century. In its current familiar meaning, as a date marking the work of women and mothers, Mother’s Day was first celebrated in 1908 in the state of West Virginia. In 1914, President Woodrow Wilson declared Mother’s Day a national holiday, and it was set for the second Sunday in May. The white carnation flower, symbolizing the purity and endurance of the mother, was determined as the symbol of the day.

Anne Reeves Jarvis was a peace activist who treated wounded soldiers on both sides of the American Civil War. She founded day labor clubs for mothers who cared for public health issues. Her daughter Anna wanted to honor her mother’s memory and cherish all the mothers in the world because she believed that “mothers are the human beings who do for you more than any other person in the world.”
Anna Jarvis’ campaign began in 1905, the year her mother died. In 1908 the US Congress rejected the proposal to make Mother’s Day an official holiday while joking that soon they would have to declare “Mother’s Day” as well.
However, thanks to the efforts of Anna Jarvis, in 1911 all American states marked the holiday, with some of them making it an official holiday. The first state to celebrate the holiday was West Virginia, the state of the Jarvis family, in 1910.
In 1914, US President Woodrow Wilson signed a Mother’s Day proclamation, held on Sunday, May 2,
